Top 5 potential landing spots for Jordan Zimmermann
San Francisco Giants
The Giants are going to be very aggressive in the starting pitching market this offseason in an effort to keep up with the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Someone like Greinke may be out of their price range, so the Giants will likely look hard at some second-tier level pitchers such as Zimmermann.
Unlike a few other clubs, San Francisco would be bringing Zimmermann in at a position of weakness. Madison Bumgarner is great at the top, but the Giants have major question marks elsewhere in the rotation and could really use some depth, as their next best starter in 2015 was rookie Chris Heston.
Tim Hudson has retired, Ryan Vogelsong may be forced to do the same after a poor campaign, and Matt Cain may have to transition to a bullpen role. Injuries destroyed San Francisco’s pitching staff in 2015, so a durable pitcher like Zimmermann would be a great fit.
It’s possible the Giants would be willing to expand their payroll and go after an ace like Greinke. However, with multiple holes in the rotation, San Francisco might be better off adding someone like Zimmerman and re-signing Mike Leake instead of dishing out one major contract.
The Giants still have some nice young position players to work with and will likely want some immediate pitching help, making San Francisco a logical landing spot for Zimmermann.
