Ryan Fitzpatrick, the starting quarterback for the New York Jets, had thumb surgery Friday morning according to Jets head coach Todd Bowles.
ESPN NFL Nation reporter for the New York Jets Rich Cimini reported that starting quarterback for the New York Jets Ryan Fitzpatrick had thumb surgery Friday morning, after losing to the Buffalo Bills 22-17 on Thursday Night Football in Week 10. New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles confirmed this at his Friday morning press conference.
Ryan Fitzpatrick has played well in his first nine games with the New York Jets. Fitzpatrick’s reputation as a journeyman starting quarterback is one of great intrigue. His ability to start at quarterback for nearly .500 teams, grow a beard that bursts out of his helmet, and being the former signal caller of the Harvard Crimson makes hims surprisingly one of the most interesting quarterbacks in the NFL. The man scored a 49 out of 50 on his Wonderlic Test leading up to the 2005 NFL Draft.
When he’s on, Fitz Magic is fun to watch. For the most part, he’s done a great job with the New York Jets. However, Fitzpatrick is coming off his worst start with the Jets this season, completing only 44.12% of his passes (15-34) for 193 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
What may have caused the poor game for Fitzpatrick could have been the result of a busted left thumb. Fitzpatrick is listed as questionable for the Jets’ Week 11 matchup against his former employer in the Houston Texans. Then again, Fitzpatrick may have just gotten a heavy dose of the blitz heavy Rex Ryan defense of the Buffalo Bills.
As a starter for the New York Jets in 2015, Ryan Fitzpatrick is 5-4 and has the Jets in the AFC Playoff mix. Though losing to division rival Buffalo isn’t promising, should he be healthy enough to play in Week 11 against Houston, expect Jets head coach Todd Bowles to stick with the veteran passer over back up Geno Smith. Fitzpatrick isn’t spectacular, but he is giving the Jets their best chance to win each week.
