Former Real Madrid president Roman Calderon has stated that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could return to Real Madrid in the future.

Speaking to British radio show TalkSport, Roman Calderon spoke about the possibility of current Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho returning to the Bernabeau in “two or three years.”

“It is not a secret that the current Real Madrid president has backed Mourinho many times,” Calderon said. “He likes him a lot and you can’t rule out seeing him again on the bench at the Bernabeu.  I know it seems strange, but if Benitez doesn’t have a good season and Mourinho gets sacked by Chelsea, I insist you can’t rule out seeing him here again. I know that the president tried to have him here instead of Benitez, but Mourinho said he didn’t want it and that it wasn’t the right time to come back. But after two or three years I can see him here again – it happened the same with Chelsea, they sacked him but then he came back. In football that is normal. The current president has a lot of interest in Mourinho, he backed him a lot during his time at Madrid and Mourinho is his favourite coach.”

These are explosive comments from such a powerful figure. Rafa Benitez was hired in the summer by the Spanish giants and was a fairly unpopular appointment among supporters. However, Mourinho was not the most popular figure while in charge in Madrid, especially in his final season, and he would be a controversial appointment in future years. Mourinho was brought in to ultimately win the Champions League, and while he had some success in La Liga and the Copa Del Rey, he was unable to bring home the ultimate prize.

The comments, however, do have some stature. Chelsea, to everyone’s delight, have been utterly atrocious all season and Mourinho finds himself under some serious pressure. Benitez, meanwhile, is in a tight spot in Madrid. He was never the first choice and never will be among supporters. If he is unable to win either La Liga or the Champions League, his job will be in trouble and if Mourinho is unable to survive the year at Stamford Bridge, we could very well see the polarizing Portuguese manager take the helm at Real.
