Maryland needs a new head football coach, and could they really be turning to Lane Kiffin to fill that void?
Whenever there is an opening for head coach in major college football, of course the name of Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin pops up to the surface. However, when it does, it’s generally used as a joke, as it’s widely believed that a major program might not trust him enough just yet to be the captain of their ship, given his track record.
Well, apparently there is one school that has an opening that really doesn’t care.
According to a report from 247 Sports, the Maryland Terrapins have recently interviewed Kiffin in regards to the opening they have after they fired Randy Edsall a few weeks ago. Suddenly, Kiffin seems to be viewed as a viable head coaching candidate once again, at least by Maryland.
Kiffin has been the offensive coordinator at Alabama since the 2014 season, but prior to that, he didn’t have the best time in the collegiate ranks. After a stint as head coach of the Oakland Raiders where he constantly butted heads with the late Al Davis, he moved on to become head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009. It seemed like a match made in heaven, but Kiffin would spurn the Vols after just one season to become the head coach of the USC Trojans in 2010. In 2013, that marriage also came to an ugly end when he was canned immediately following a September loss to Arizona State during a season in which USC was supposed to challenge for the Pac-12 title.
Whether or not Maryland decides to go with Kiffin remains to be seen, but now we have a little bit of proof that he’s accepted as a legitimate candidate once again.
