Starting corner back Brent Grimes has been announced inactive for the Miami Dolphins’ match up with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Miami Dolphins have been utterly underwhelming all year, especially on defense. After the big free agent acquisition of Ndamukong Suh, the Dolphins’ defense was projected to be one of the best in the league. Brent Grimes was a crucial aspect of this defense at corner back, and loosing the starting corner will be a massive blow for Dan Campbell and his Dolphins.

The pro-bowl caliber corner back has played well this season, even while his teammates have struggled to match his quality. Grimes has 22 total tackles over the year, has two interceptions and has been the Dolphins’ best corner this season. After leaving the Atlanta Falcons in 2013 Grimes has been a success in Miami, and he will be sorely missed this Sunday.

Ian Rapoprt has tweeted that Grimes is inactive due to illness, which is terrible luck for the Dolphins. With star defensive end Cameron Wake already out due to a season-ending Achilles injury, Miami’s defense is significantly depleted and Dan Campbell will be forced to start rookie Bobby McCain in place of Grimes.

Dolphins’ fans had become excited at the team’s resurgence since Joe Philburn’s firing, but a Thursday night pummeling by the New England Patriots quickly ended any momentum that the Dolphins had developed. A win this Sunday would give them an outside shot of an AFC wildcard birth, but they will have to do so without Brent Grimes.
