Wes Welker active for St. Louis Rams
New free agent acquisition, Wes Welker, will be active for the St. Louis Rams on Sunday after only a few days of practice with his new team.
Wes Welker has been a star wide receiver for years in the NFL, but after a series of concussions many doubted his ability to handle the physicality of the game. After leaving the Denver Broncos last summer, Welker had been searching for a new team, but struggled to find a new home. His concussion problems have been the main sticking point, along with a downturn in production in recent seasons. However, the veteran back was signed earlier this week by the St. Louis Rams and will see time on Sunday, according to Ian Rapoport.
Jeff Fisher and his Rams have struggled to create production on the offensive side of the ball so far this year, and will be hoping the veteran presence of Welker will galvanize the offense. Rookie running back Todd Gurley has looked like the best thing since sliced bread since returning from a knee injury he sustained in college, but Nick Foles has struggled to develop a threatening passing game. Kenny Britt leads the team with 311 yards this year, but Tavon Austin is the only wide receiver with more than 20 receptions. Those are woeful statistics, and Fisher will be hoping that Welker can have an instant impact.
While in New England, Welker had five 1,000-plus yard seasons, and although his production alongside Peyton Manning waned, he still has quality and plenty of experience. Whether the Welker experiment works is yet to be seen, but Rams’ supporters should be excited to get their first glance this Sunday as the team takes on the Chicago Bears.
