Report: Rob Ryan to get the axe in New Orleans
By Randy Gurzi
One day after surrendering 514 yards of offense to the Washington Redskins, the New Orleans Saints are reportedly firing defensive coordinator Rob Ryan
When Rob Ryan was fired by the Dallas Cowboys in 2013 he said he would be out of work “for like five minutes.” After two and a half seasons in New Orleans as the defensive coordinator, Ryan looks to be headed to the unemployment line for another five minutes (or maybe longer this time).
Ryan has a reputation for being a solid defensive mind, but the numbers don’t necessarily support that. In his history his teams generally have a solid turnaround in his first season, while they struggle after that.
At times Ryan tries to implement overly complex schemes, leading to confusion on the defensive side. This was what was believed to be the reason for his firing in Dallas and now has led to the Saints owning the worst pass defense ever, according to Pro Football Talk.
New Orleans had one of their worst outings in recent memory Sunday, and Ryan’s unit was embarrassed by the Washington Redskins. Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw four touchdown passes and the Skins totaled 514 yards of offense on the struggling defense.
The firing should come as no shock, as tenure has not really been Rob’s thing since leaving the Raiders following the 2008 season. After spending five seasons in Oakland, his longest stint has been his current one in New Orleans.
Ryan lasted two years in Cleveland and the same amount in Dallas. It is starting to seem as if his reputation is based solely on his name. Being the son of former NFL head coach and defensive genius Buddy Ryan and the brother of Bill coach Rex Ryan may be the biggest reason he keeps getting brought in as a defensive coach.
