Reports from Monday morning have come to fruition, as it appears the New Orleans Saints have fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan

Early on Monday it was reported that the New Orleans Saints would be firing defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Later on in the afternoon, however, head coach Sean Payton did his best to calm the rumors down by stating that no changes were taking place at the time.

Well, we know now that this was all just smoke and mirrors from the Saints head coach, as Ian Rapoport is reporting that the team has indeed shown Ryan the door.

In the grand scheme of things, this was something that was coming sooner rather than later.

Sunday was one of the low points of this team on the defensive side of the ball, as they gave up 47 points to Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins offense. From the moment that game ended, the speculation started to run rampant as to how much longer Ryan would be holding his position with the team. Mind you, that performance on Sunday came just a few weeks after they gave up 52 points to the New York Giants.

Those two horrible performances on defense mentioned above have landed the Saints in the last spot in the league as it pertains to scoring defense, giving up an average of 31.5 points per game.

Ryan was brought to New Orleans, a team known in recent years for their efficiency on the offensive side of the ball, in 2013 to see if he can help get the complete package on the field by fixing the defense up. Things in that first season went rather well, with the team even making the playoffs where they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round. However, the wheels fell off beginning in 2014 and that has led us to where we sit here on Monday.

Taking Ryan’s place for the remainder of the season will be defensive assistant Dennis Allen.
