Bengals owner Mike Brown didn’t want to trade Carson Palmer
Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown has a lot of regrets about how Carson Palmer left the team. He also never wanted to trade him.
The Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals are both having tremendous seasons in 2015. The two teams will do battle on Sunday night, inside the University of Phoenix Stadium, where Carson Palmer will take on the team that he left during a messy situation between him and management.
Palmer forced his way out of the franchise back in 2011 and was eventually traded in the middle of the season, after he announced his retirement, which forced the Bengals to move him for what ended up being a first-round pick and a second-round pick from the Oakland Raiders.
Palmer wasn’t good in Oakland, and was eventually shipped off for scraps to the Arizona Cardinals. In Arizona, Carson Palmer has looked like an elite quarterback, thanks in part to one of the best offensive coaches in the league in Bruce Arians.
According to an interview with Alex Marvez Fox Sports, Mike Brown has regrets about how the whole situation of Palmer leaving Cincinnati went down. He also regrets trading the quarterback away.
"“I like Carson Palmer personally,” Brown said. “I did when he was here. I regret it broke apart the way it did. I don’t want him to beat us any more than he wants us to beat him. I’m sure that will be in the back of his mind. But other than that, I wish him well.“He’s a special passer, very accurate,” Brown continued. “I look at him play and I see the player that we had when he was here. When he’s on and playing the way he can play, he is a big-time winning quarterback.”"
It’s clear that Brown really never wanted to lose Palmer. When Palmer forced his hand by announcing his retirement, Brown was forced to make a move and send Palmer on his way.
Fortunately for the Bengals, the deal worked out the way that it did and they now are a team that is a contender in the AFC, and Carson Palmer is succeeding on a team that is a contender in the NFC. Still, Mike Brown has his regrets about the whole situation and they are certainly reasonable regrets.
