The National Football League standings look like a giant typo. Teams that were supposed to be good are playing like total nonsense, while other franchises who never get the job done are running amok toward the playoffs.

Then there are the New England Patriots, who continue to roll toward the playoffs. If New England can win its final seven regular-season games and reach the playoffs at 16-0 (still a huge longshot but certainly not out of the question with this group), it would be one of the greatest accomplishments in professional sports history. The Patriots would be going undefeated for the second time in the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era, something that only the 1972 Miami Dolphins accomplished in the past 75 years.

New England has a chance to do it, although the loss of slot receiver Julian Edelman for the remainder of the regular season hurts. Danny Amendola will need to step up and get the job done, something he should be able to do provided he stays healthy. The Patriots certainly have a soft schedule the rest of the way, with perhaps the only obvious stumbling block being the Denver Broncos. Then again, that game is looking easier by the second.

The Carolina Panthers are also undefeated and could run the table, thanks to a great defense. Between Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis and Josh Norman, Carolina has three All-Pro-caliber players who are lifting up a middling offense. The Panthers also have a nice slate remaining, including a slew of divisional games against the mediocre NFC South.
