NFL Week 10 awards: Adrian Peterson is (still) quite good
By Brad Rowland
It was a wild Week 10 in the world of the NFL, with some of the league’s flagship franchises (i.e. the Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos) suffering brutal and unexpected defeats. Still, there was plenty in the way of positive performance to discuss throughout the weekend, and this space is dedicated to the best of the best from an individual standpoint. Without further delay, here is the hardware for Week 10.
Offensive Rookie of the Week
Jeremy Langford, RB Chicago Bears
It is unquestionably odd to see a running back not named Todd Gurley in this space, but Jeremy Langford was much more effective this past week. Langford isn’t even supposed to be playing a major role for Chicago this season, considering that Matt Forte remains firmly entrenched as the team’s lead back. However, the former Michigan State standout has picked up the slack in a big way since Forte went down with an injury.
In Chicago’s shocking 37-13 win over the Rams on Sunday, Langford carried the ball 20 times for 73 yards and a touchdown. In truth, that probably would have been enough to garner the nod for this week’s rookie honor. However, his biggest contribution to Chicago’s cause came through the air, as he caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, including an 83-yard scamper on a screen play.
The Bears played out of their collective minds on Sunday, and Langford was pretty special in his own right.
Runner-up: Matt Jones, RB Washington
Defensive Rookie of the Week
Mario Edwards, DE Oakland Raiders
Mario Edwards got off to a slow start in his rookie season, but Sunday’s effort served as his full-fledged breakout. The second round selection from Florida State exploded for 11 tackles and a sack against the Vikings, and though the Raiders were on the wrong end of a lopsided decision, it was by no fault of Edwards.
With Khalil Mack on the opposite side it should, at least in theory, become easier for Edwards to make an impact, but he still must take it upon himself to make plays. On Sunday he did just that, and his performance was certainly worthy of public appreciation.
Runner-up: Marcus Peters, CB Kansas City Chiefs
