NFL Hall-of-Famer Cris Carter breaks down Cam Newton’s controversial touchdown dance.
Cris Carter might be too old to know what “dabbing” is.
However, he still felt that he could accurately describe the dance to ESPN’s Mike Greenberg on Wednesday’s edition of Mike and Mike. After scoring a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton “dabbed on them folks” after scoring a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans.
Not only were the Titans’ players upset with the touchdown celebration, a Tennessee mother wrote a letter to Newton conveying her displeasure. Newton’s actions have come under fire recently, starting with him removing a Packers banner from the walls of Bank of America stadium.
Thus, the reason why Greenberg and Carter were discussing the dance. Carter gave some “sound” reasoning behind why Newton performed the dance, and how to execute the move. Per Deadspin:
"“Well the first part you have to do is put your arm up and your elbow up and you put your face into it—that’s called bapping, okay?” Carter said. “Kendrick Lamar, a lot of other people, Drake—everyone is doing it, okay?”"
Greenberg remained confused, however I don’t think Carter’s next comment cleared anything up.
"“Now at the end, they do a little C or something to add a little stuff to it,” Carter said."
Whenever middle-aged men try to explain pop culture phenomena, it’s absolutely priceless. Greenberg clearly had no idea what was going on with the dance, and neither did Carter. He might as well have said “all of the kids are doing it these days.”
