Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers have been making a ton of trades since they hired Andrew Friedman as general manager. For that very reason, the Dodgers should be considered as a potential trade destination for just about any player who would upgrade their roster. Fernandez would certainly do that.

Because of Fernandez’s likely cheap salary for at least 2016 (likely 2017 as well), the Dodgers could feasibly re-sign Zack Greinke and trade for Fernandez. That would give them an unfair 1-2-3 combo to start their rotation. He would be an even more attractive trade option for the Dodgers should they lose out on Greinke.

The Dodgers have the pieces to make the trade happen. The Dodgers are unique in that they are a big market team who has the luxury of having a very deep prospect pool. They also have MLB-ready players to offer the Marlins. The Dodgers could get Yasiel Puig involved in a trade for Jose Fernandez. The Marlins would be getting back a cheap outfielder with a ton of potential.

The one thing that could hold the Dodgers back from trading for Fernandez is that they already have a pitcher with injury concerns in Brett Anderson. Do the Dodgers really want to hand two rotation spots to guys who have had trouble staying healthy? Obviously Fernandez doesn’t have the injury woes that Anderson has suffered throughout his career. However, enough pitchers have had trouble recovering from Tommy John surgery that this is an issue that should be taken seriously.

The reward far outweighs the risk for the Dodgers. If Fernandez is truly on the trade block, it would be shocking if the Dodgers weren’t at least interested in him.
