1. Cubs need a center fielder

Dexter Fowler did a fine job as the Cubs’ center fielder in 2015, and he set career highs in hitting categories. He hit 17 home runs while driving in 46 runs, and he continued to be a reliable base runner with 20 stolen bases. However, Fowler’s contract has expired after one season. Now that he is back in free agency, the Cubs are left with the inexperienced Matt Szczur as their only center fielder. Gardner has plenty of experience as a center fielder, so he would be the perfect piece to fill this hole for the Cubs.

Gardner’s versatility does not hurt either, as he can also play left field if needed. Kyle Schwarber currently serves as the Cubs’ left fielder, but he will likely be called upon to play catcher when Miguel Montero takes the day off. This leaves Gardner as an option if Chris Coghlan is not available to play.

The Cubs are set at just about every other position, so keeping the center field position filled can only help them continue to emerge as World Series frontrunners. Re-signing Fowler is not out of the question, but Gardner is a better hitter and even more dangerous on the base paths.
