The Oklahoma offense suffered a crushing blow as Baker Mayfield and Samaje Perine each left with injuries.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield left Saturday’s game against TCU with a head injury, which appears to be a concussion. The Sooners are taking precautionary measures by leaving him out for the rest of the game, but the Sooners have the luxury to make this decision and move on since they took a 23-7 lead over TCU at halftime. Trevor Knight has stepped in for Mayfield, and he will have his first opportunity to start since being injured during the 2014 season. ESPN CollegeFootball Twitter account confirmed Mayfield’s game status.

The Sooners are still in the national championship hunt with one loss, as they entered this game being ranked seventh in the country. A win over No. 18 TCU would make them even more serious contenders since No. 6 Oklahoma State is losing badly to No. 10 Baylor. However, the Sooners experienced even worse luck when starting running back Samaje Perine went down with a leg injury. His ankle has been taped, but it remains to be seen how serious his injury is.

Although Oklahoma can still win the Big 12 and slip into the College Football Playoff, their chances of winning may become slimmer since they have to take on Oklahoma State on the road in a Big 12 rivalry matchup. Fortunately for the Sooners, Knight already offers starting experience and previously led them to a Sugar Bowl upset win over Alabama in the 2013 season. The Sooners will look to rise to the occasion with Knight at quarterback once again.
