Colin Kaepernick has been placed on season-ending IR.

Colin Kaepernick’s trying season has finally reached an end, albeit a premature one.

One week after being benched by San Francisco in favor of Blaine Gabbert, the 49ers have now placed Kaepernick on season-ending injured reserve. Undrafted free agent and former South Carolina Gamecock quarterback Dylan Thompson has been promoted to the active roster.

According to Adam Schefter, Kaepernick informed the team on Friday that he wanted to have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. From there, the IR decision was imminent.

According to Pro Football Talk, the injury should have no bearing on Kaepernick’s ability to pass a physical next season if (and likely when) he parts ways with the Niners and seeks to join another team.

"The injury is to Kaepernick’s non-throwing shoulder and is not believed to be serious enough to prevent him from passing a physical next year."

It’s been quite the fall from grace for Kaepernick. Not too long ago he was starting in the Super Bowl and being anointed by Ron Jaworski as the next great quarterback in the National Football League. Now he’s benched, shelved and staring down the prospects of the unemployment line should the Niners decide to cut him before next season.
