Ole Miss dominated to hand LSU its third-straight loss
The first half of the SEC battle between the Ole Miss Rebels and LSU Tigers inside the confines of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was nothing but the home team flying high. Chad Kelly and the Rebels offense were rolling while Leonard Fournette, Brandon Harris, and the LSU offense struggled to do anything against Robert Nkemdiche and company on the Ole Miss defense. The Rebels jumped out to a 24-0 lead over the Tigers, but it looked like the Tigers might try and make a game of it at the end of the first half and the start of the second after they scored 17 unanswered points.
LSU first scored on a blown coverage on a deep throw to the end zone and then benefitted from a fumbled kick return at the start of the third quarter. That led to another score and, down only a touchdown, Les Miles’ group looked like they might have a chance at a remarkable comeback victory. However, Kelly and the Rebels turned up the heat with Kelly chucking the pigskin all over the field and causing the Tigers major problems with his legs. After a phenomenal rushing touchdown by Kelly that saw him flip across the goal line and then a passing touchdown to tight end Evan Engram, Ole Miss took a 38-17 lead. Things got ugly for a bit when a scuffle broke out, but that score ultimately held until the final whistle as LSU suffered their third consecutive loss.
Three stars
Chad Kelly stepped up in this big game and delivered the type of star-caliber performance expected of him. He threw for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and no picks on the day while also rushing for 82 yards and two more scores.
Robert Nkemdiche proved every bit why he’s going to easily be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. The big defensive lineman terrorized Brandon Harris all day and seemed to be in the LSU backfield on every play.
Despite not finding the end zone, Leonard Fournette came back to life a bit in this game. The LSU back finished with 108 yards rushing on 25 carries to go with 72 yards receiving on four catches.
