Memphis Tigers vs. Temple Owls
A pair of struggling teams will look to turn things around quickly when the No. 21 Memphis Tigers meet the Temple Owls on Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.
Memphis raced out to an 8-0 start while being ranked as high as 13th by the college football playoff committee before suffering back-to-back losses against Navy and Houston. While the Tigers are eliminated from AAC title contention and likely the New Years Six bowls, they can certainly improve their postseason positioning with a win on Saturday.
Junior quarterback Paxton Lynch will hope to continue a terrific season in which he’s thrown for 3,292 yards and 21 touchdowns to just three interceptions. Two of those interceptions have come during the current losing streak, as the normally ultra-efficient Memphis offense has had trouble taking care of the ball.
After starting the season 7-0 and playing Notre Dame closely on Halloween, Temple has looked shaky in a win over SMU and ugly 44-23 loss against South Florida. The previously dominant Owls defense does not look nearly has good as it did earlier in the season and surrendered 326 rushing yards to the Bulls last Saturday.
Still, linebacker Tyler Matakevich leads an experienced group with the potential to get back on track quickly. Temple still controls its own destiny in the AAC East and would get a shot at Navy or Houston in the title game.
