In the biggest Big Ten game of the year, No. 9 Michigan State traveled to Columbus to face off against No. 3 Ohio State with a conference title on the line.

Shocking news broke right before the game started that senior quarterback Connor Cook wouldn’t play for Michigan State and it looked all but over for the Spartans. That wasn’t the case, though, as the game was still solid and was tight for the entire first half.

In fact, the game was everything Big Ten fans were hoping for as both teams were playing their hearts out despite a sloppy, rainy day. Ohio Stadium was rocking all game long and the Ohio State Buckeyes had to fight all game long to pull out a scrappy win.

No one gave Michigan State a chance to win even with Cook healthy, but even with the senior quarterback out of the game and backups Tyler O’Connor and Damion Terry alternating drives, the Spartans stuck with the Buckeyes.

Michigan State pulled the unthinkable upset, beating the Buckeyes 17-14 in Columbus.

Three Stars

Michael Geiger. This one is easy, with the game on the line, the junior kicker stepped up to make the biggest kick of his life, winning the game for the underdog.

Tyler O’Connor really stepped up in the absence of Cook. He completed 7-of-12 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 25 yards on eight carries.

L.J. Scott came into the game at running back and provided a spark, making some huge runs to give Geiger a chance at a game-winning field goal. Scott had 13 carries for 58.

Highlights

Betting Odds

Ohio State was a 13.5-point favorite heading into this one, surprisingly, and the over/under was 53 points. The Spartans beat the spread by winning the game and the over was not achieved, obviously.

Next Week

Michigan State will host Penn State next week to finish another impressive season. This is a much bigger game than it looks on paper. The Nittany Lions are no easy victory, either.

Ohio State’s tough stretch won’t stop here as they have a chance to make it to the Big Ten title game with a win over Michigan. The Buckeyes will have to travel to Ann Arbor to make this happen in one of the biggest rivalry games in years between these two.
