WWE Survivor Series opened up with a semifinal match in the tournament to determine the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion with Roman Reigns facing off with Alberto Del Rio. Reigns was the No. 1 contender before Seth Rollins injured his knee, but Del Rio just returned at the last pay-per-view and won the United States Championship. Subsequently, this was a big one between two top-level guys.

The match began with the two competitors feeling each other out, hitting inconsequential moves. Del Rio gained the advantage once things went to the outside, though, targeting Reigns’ shoulder. The upper hand was short-lived once back in the ring as Reigns fought back, that is until Del Rio got him on the apron and nailed a step-up enzuigiri:

Del Rio took to the match to the ground, trying to wear Reigns down. Even when Reigns tried to power through, ADR was ready as he sent Roman flying shoulder first into the steel post on a missed spear in the corner. The U.S. Champ continued on the attack and tried to hit a big dropkick by the ropes, but Roman ducked it and sent Del Rio to the floor, ultimately setting up the apron dropkick:

Reigns then tried to control the action with his power and did so until he tried to land a Superman Punch. Del Rio avoided the attempt and then hit him with a Backstabber:

This then began the two men jockeying for control. Del Rio had it for a moment, but Reigns fought back. Then Reigns tried to hit a superplex, but ADR knocked him down to hang for the foot stomp. Reigns moved out of the way and then set up the Superman Punch that landed:

Roman then tried for the Spear, but Del Rio smartly avoided that and countered with a superkick:

ADR then tried for the Cross Armbreaker, but Reigns powered out of it with a wicked powerbomb, but it wasn’t good for the pin. Reigns then gathered himself, but for too long as Del Rio locked in the Cross Armbreaker again. And again, Reigns powered out by carrying Del Rio to the ropes so that he had to break the hold.
