Amy Winehouse Almost Made a James Bond Theme Song

The late singer songwriter Amy Winehouse was originally the musical talent selected to perform the Quantum of Solace theme song.

According to an interview with James Bond composer David Arnold in the new book Some Kind of Hero: The Remarkable Story of the James Bond Films by Matthew Field and Ajay Chowdhury, singer Amy Winehouse was supposed to write and perform the James Bond theme song for 2008’s Quantum of Solace.

The song was set to be produced by Mark Ronson, who had completed several layers for the track that resembled a “contemporary post-sixties” sound.

Clearly, this song concept was scrapped, and Alicia Keys and Jack White were brought in to perform a new song.

The result was “Another Way to Die,” one of the worst Bond theme songs in the franchise.

More from Entertainment

Consequence of Sound has the theme at number 18 on their rankings list of James Bond themes. Rolling Stone has it second to last on their list at number 21. Collider, too, has “Another Way to Die” at second to last in their ranking.

It seems impossible that two powerhouse names in music could flub a James Bond theme so badly. Truly, it is a bad song. It sounds like Keys and White don’t know that there is another person singing on the track; that is how clashing their duet is. The only Bond theme that compares in terms of a sheer lack of quality is Die Another Day‘s Madonna theme, a song which doesn’t even sound like music.

In light of this, an Amy Winehouse theme song sounds like heaven. Her voice would have fit the tone of the conventional James Bond theme well. Unfortunately, it never came to pass.
