San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers are in the same boat as the Eagles and the Rams: They have no idea who will be their starting quarterback in 2016. The 49ers are likely done with Colin Kaepernick; whether it’s by trade or by outright cutting him, the 49ers are going to cut their ties with Kaepernick. The 49ers should consider giving a shot to Johnny Manziel. He’s a similar type of quarterback to Kaepernick and Manziel has more upside.

A huge reason for Johnny Manziel’s success at Texas A&M was wide receiver Mike Evans, who was as reliable as they come in college. Johnny could throw the ball in his general direction knowing that Evans would come down with it with his vice grip and his incredible athleticism. Anquan Boldin isn’t quite as athletic as Evans, but Boldin is one of the most reliable receivers in the league. Simply put, if the ball gets to Boldin’s hands, he’s going to catch it a lot more often than he’ll drop it. Manziel has never had that kind of receiver in the NFL.

Manziel would also have wide receiver Torrey Smith, who is a great deep threat. Manziel has a powerful arm that could take advantage of Smith’s speed. The 49ers have a history of developing quarterbacks. They have had two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Joe Montana and Steve Young, but could Johnny Football be as good as them? Likely not. But Manziel is the type of QB who the 49ers should seek for the near future.
