After leading Iowa to an undefeated regular season, head coach Kirk Ferentz has been named the Big Ten Coach of the Year.

While all eyes were on Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State in the Big Ten this season, the Iowa Hawkeyes quietly put together a season that has them on the verge of the College Football Playoff, if they can defeat the Michigan State Spartans in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday.

On the season, the Hawkeyes went 12-0 in the West Division, and took care of their business. Thanks to their undefeated season and a chance to represent the Big Ten in the playoff, head coach Kirk Ferentz has earned himself some hardware, as he was named the 2015 Dave McClain Coach of the Year.

While Jim Harbaugh had a great year at Michigan and Mark Dantonio had a great year at Michigan State, going undefeated and putting Iowa in a championship position, really made Ferentz the clear winner of the award in the Big Ten.

Some will argue about the strength of schedule, but the Hawkeyes went undefeated and took care of their business, which is something that the other teams in the conference can’t say.

The strength of good coaching is the ability to come away with victories in close games. During the regular season, the Hawkeyes were able to do that a lot, as they had plenty of close affairs with teams. Their belief never wavered and Ferentz always had them in good position to pull through with the win.

Thanks to that, he is now the Big Ten Coach of the Year.
