With Major League Soccer calling a press conference in Toronto for Wednesday morning at the Air Canada Centre, it looks as though Italian international, Sebastian Giovinco, will officially be named the 2015 MLS MVP.
Sebastian Giovinco may have had the greatest individual season in Major League Soccer history. The Italian international became the only player to ever score 20 goals and combine it with at least 10 assists. He managed to lead the league in both categories, finishing the 2015 campaign with 22 goals, and 16 helpers.
The Atomic Ant has already taken home the 2015 MLS Golden Boot, and the 2015 MLS Newcomer of the Year awards, but it looks as though his remarkable debut season in North America will also net him the league’s most prestigious individual trophy. MLS has called a press conference on Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET in Toronto, where it is expected that the 28-year-old will officially be named as the 2015 Landon Donovan MVP award winner.
The league named the finalists for the award a few weeks ago, with the Columbus Crew’s Kei Kamara, and Sporting Kansas City’s Benny Feilhaber, also making the cut. All three players were announced as part of the 2015 MLS Best XI, that was unveiled last Sunday night.
Kamara finished level on goals with Giovinco this season, but missed out on the Golden Boot because he didn’t provide as many assists. However, he will be in action on Sunday night at Mapfre Stadium, when the Crew host the Portland Timbers in the 2015 MLS Cup final.
Despite Giovinco helping to lead Toronto FC to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, the club were ultimately eliminated in the first round by the Montreal Impact. Although, his goal that officially put TFC in the postseason could win the Italian even more hardware, as it is currently a finalist for 2015 MLS Goal of the Year.
