Adam Schefter is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys will likely pursue Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel due to the health of Tony Romo.
The Dallas Cowboys have been linked to quarterback Johnny Manziel since well before the 2014 NFL Draft. During that draft, Manziel was constantly linked to the Cowboys before Dallas decided to go with offensive lineman Zack Martin.
It’s clear that the Cowboys made the right decision since Martin has been quite good for the Cowboys thus far. However, don’t rule out the Cowboys from pursuing Johnny Manziel this offseason.
From ESPN:
"With Romo’s durability in question, some around the league believe Jones could again have interest in Manziel. It would be very Jerry-like, too, for him to make a play for Manziel this winter."
The Cowboys clearly need a backup plan for Tony Romo. Romo is still a great quarterback when he’s healthy. The Cowboys are 15-4 in games that Romo has started over the past two seasons. The issue is that Romo is beginning to have trouble staying on the field. He has missed at least one game in each of the past three seasons and has only played in four games this season.
Next: Five teams who should trade for Manziel
Manziel could be a perfect backup quarterback option for the Cowboys. Romo could help mentor Manziel and the Cowboys would have a quarterback who is likely capable of being a starter should Romo get injured. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett could help Manziel improve as a quarterback. Garrett has already worked wonders with Romo. It’s certainly possible that Garrett would have the same kind of influence on a young quarterback like Manziel.
