3. Miami scores off eight-lateral kick return to win (10/31)

The Duke Blue Devils thought that they had a home game against the Miami Hurricanes wrapped up after they went ahead 27-24 with just six seconds left on the clock. At the worst, they would only have to stop Miami on one offensive play to secure the win. However, Miami opted to try to keep the ball alive via laterals on the return to somehow pick up a win over the Blue Devils. That’s where the mass insanity started.

For the first seven laterals, it didn’t look like the Hurricanes were able to get anything going. They were keeping the play alive, but they seemed to be operating at the same level of the field without ever really advancing the ball. Then, a long lateral sent the ball over to the left sideline. With blockers ahead of Corn Elder, the Hurricanes cleared a path and Elder made a couple of nifty moves to stay upright and take it to the house for the score and the Miami victory.

This play was shrouded in controversy almost immediately for a number of reasons. One Miami player should have been ruled down and there were several blocking penalties that should have been called on the Hurricanes that weren’t. In fact, the missed calls were so egregious that the officials for this game were suspended by the ACC. Even still, the play stood and was one of the most incredible things to watch over the entire season no matter how many missed calls there were.
