Bobby Wilder-Old Dominion

There’s no shame in being a good FCS football coach and that’s exactly what Bobby Wilder is. He piloted the Monarchs to great success at that level of college football. Unfortunately, since ODU made the jump to the FBS Level and Conference USA things have been a struggle for Wilder and his football program.

When your best win is a five point triumph at UT-San Antonio, it’s probably time to start working on your coaching resume. The Monarchs went 5-7 this season but that was their best win. I can only imagine the electric atmosphere that game must have featured between the two-storied rivals.

Old Dominion should be better than Bobby Wilder has them performing at the moment. It’s a school that’s perfectly situated in an area of Virginia with incredible football talent and the school has put significant resources behind its flagship program. This should be one of the best jobs in Conference USA and it hasn’t ascended to that level under Wilder.

The 5-7 record is misleading for the Monarchs. Their wins were against UTSA, Charlotte, Eastern Michigan, Norfolk State and UTEP. Not exactly five college football powerhouses. Don’t think the recent transition to the FBS level is any excuse for their struggles either. They were waxed 49-0 by Appalachian State who just made the jump as well on their home field. Wilder had one of the weakest schedules in all of college football and still couldn’t get this program to a bowl game.

The Monarchs were actually a game worse off this season (their second in FBS) which would give me great concern if I was their administration. This program gives off the vibe of a team that is on a slow slide backwards until the administration wakes up and makes a much-needed change.
