Zack Greinke agrees with Arizona Diamondbacks: Winners and losers
Losers: San Francisco Giants
While the San Francisco Giants did lose anything by Greinke leaving the Los Angeles Dodgers, they are losers as a result of Greinke signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks for two reasons. One, they lost out on him after reportedly being a strong contender, and two, he stayed in the division.
With the Diamondbacks already showing great signs of growth in 2015, the move to get Greinke makes it even tougher on the Giants to compete for the division crown now that there is a third team in the mix with them and the Dodgers.
The Giants are a team that needs more front of the rotation pitching. Madison Bumgarner is a nice ace for the Giants, but having Greinke with him would have made the Giants absolutely lethal. Matt Cain is coming off injury and hasn’t shown he can be the guy again, while Tim Lincecum is far removed from those days of being the ace for the team.
San Francisco will still be a contender and a very tough ball club, because that is what their franchise is built on. It’s just that they missed out on so much by not being able to land Greinke.
Their best plan of action might be to look into retaining Mike Leake, who is a free agent, because they are going to need pitching depth to survive in 2016.
