Zack Greinke agrees with Arizona Diamondbacks: Winners and losers
Losers: San Diego Padres
There’s really a lesson to be learned in everything. Last season, the San Diego Padres that were the team that blew everyone away with their aggressive moves in free agency. The problem for the Padres is that they spent a lot of money, when the market for talent really wasn’t all that great.
They spent their money on top B-level talent, while trading a lot of prospects for talent that they ended up trading off when things didn’t end up panning out for them, which led to a change in management.
The lesson here is that just because you have the money available to make moves to try and make a push, doesn’t mean you should throw it all away on the first talent that becomes available. James Shields was good for San Diego, but now it looks like they are even trying to move him.
With the Arizona Diamondbacks getting in on Greinke from out of nowhere, the Padres will once again be competing with the Colorado Rockies, who are young and improving, for the cellar of the National League West. It’s kind of like this year’s Sacramento Kings in the NBA. They went all in for a mediocre year, and just like the Kings will learn, the Padres learned it wasn’t worth it.
Oh, and to stick with the recurring theme here, they have to deal with Greinke in the division still.
