Andre Ellington is definitely out for Sunday’s game against the St Louis Rams likely against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Arizona Cardinals are one of the best teams in the NFL this season. With such a high octane offense under the orchestration of Carson Palmer, the Cardinals elevated themselves to the top of the NFC West division and an impressive 9-2 record. The aforementioned offense has been a large factor in the Cardinals’ success, and a major aspect of their offensive firepower has been the running game.

After Ellington went down in the offseason, the Cardinals went and picked up veteran running back Chris Johnson. Johnson has been back to his old tricks this season, leading the team in rushing yards. However, Johnson fractured his tibia in last week’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers. It was expected that Ellington would then take over as the lead back, but a toe injury has plagued him this week, and now looks to put him out of both this Sunday’s game and next Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

It is a major blow for the Cardinal’s offense, and while many will still expect them to beat the Rams this Sunday, Thursday’s crucial NFC match up with the Vikings is very much in the balance. Rookie David Johnson will now be the number one running back while Johnson and Ellington are on the sidelines. He has looked sensational at times, scoring four touchdowns on a limited amount of offensive snaps. Whether he will be able to handle the lead role remains to be seen, but it looks as though we are about to find out.
