Colin Kaepernick could still return to 49ers

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick could still return in 2016.

It’s fair to say that Colin Kaepernick has not lived up to expectations. After replacing Alex Smith, who has since go on to play well with Kansas City, Kaepernick took the 49ers to the Super Bowl and lost out to Ray Lewis and his Baltimore Ravens. Kaepernick, however, has regressed significantly over the past few years, and this season, was demoted below Blaine Gabbert to second string.

The 49ers quarterback has since been placed on IR due to a torn labrum in his left, non-throwing shoulder. Kaepernick underwent surgery on Nov. 24 and is out for the year. Many assumed that the combination of a lack of form and injury would see the 49ers end their relationship with the quarterback. However, per Adam Schefter, it now looks as though they may well welcome him back in 2016.

They met last week, per Schefter, and have not completely shut out the possibility of having Kaepernick quarterback their side in 2016. This season, Kaepernick has been utterly dreadful, throwing for only 1,615 yards with a completion percentage of 59%. His 78.5 passer rating is the fifth worst in the NFL, and he has now been replaced by not so impressive Gabbert.

The 2015 season has been a write off for the 49ers. After mutually agreeing to part ways with head coach Jim Harbaugh last summer, and replacing him with Jim Tomsula, San Francisco has slipped to a lowly record of 3-8 and face an up and coming Chicago Bears team on Sunday. While 2015 is gone, 2016 is very much uncertain, and the quarterback situation is as murky as ever.
