NFL playoffs: 5 reasons the Oakland Raiders will make it
By Dani Bostick
The Oakland Raiders are third in the AFC West, but could still make the playoffs.
The Oakland Raiders haven’t made the playoffs since 2002 when the lost the Super Bowl. Since then, they have not had a season with a winning record, and have had losing records every year except 2010 and 2011 when the team managed to go 8-8.
The team has had nine head coaches since the year they made a Super Bowl appearance, and as many quarterbacks. The lack of consistent leadership in the pocket and on the sidelines has been just one contributor to their dismal track record since the 2002 season.
Going into Week 13, the Raiders find themselves third in the AFC West with a record of 5-6. First in their division are the Denver Broncos (9-2), who have had surprising success under backup quarterback Brock Osweiler. After a dismal start, the Kansas City Chiefs (6-5) have clawed their way up to second place, even in the absence of star running back Jamaal Charles. The Chargers round out the AFC West picture with a 3-8 record that puts them in last place in the division.
Though the Raiders have struggled in recent weeks, losing three of their last four games. Still, they are still in contention for an AFC playoff berth.
Here are five reasons the Raiders could make it to the postseason for the first time over a decade.
