9: Roberto Alomar to the Blue Jays

The trade: Toronto received Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter

San Diego received Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez

This trade was a slam dunk for the Blue Jays. Dare I say, it was a… home run? Nobody? Having acquired Alomar and Joe Carter in 1990, these were the two most vital pieces to Toronto’s back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.

Of course, everyone remembers Joe Carter’s series-winning home run, but Alomar was arguably more important to the Blue Jays’ success. He helped the Jays to their first World Series appearance in 1992 with a crucial – and massively underappreciated – game-tying home run in Game 4 of the ALCS. In every season with Toronto, Roberto Alomar won a Gold Glove. Carter was an important player in his own right, as he led the team in home runs and RBIs in 1994 and 1995.

Tony Fernandez was an important contributor for the Jays, and was one of the standout players during Toronto’s pennant-winning 1985 season. However, once he got traded to San Diego, however he only spent two seasons before he went to the Mets in 1993. McGriff played well once he got to San Diego, but he was dealt in 1993 when it was clear that the Padres were out of playoff contention.
