MLB Rumors: Detroit Tigers looking at Yoenis Cespedes and Alex Gordon
With the winter meetings underway, the Detroit Tigers have their eyes on some outfield bats.
New general manager Al Avila is looking to take the Detroit Tigers from the cellar of the American League Central, to right back to competing for the division crown and dominating the division, much like they did for almost the past decade.
The Tigers have already gotten a jump on improving the roster thus far in the off-season, by adding a couple of starting pitchers to their starting rotation. The team signed a big contract, by inking Jordan Zimmerman to join the top of their rotation with Justin Verlander, which should hopefully provide some stability to the front end. They also added Mike Pelfrey on a short contract, so that they could also add some depth on the back end of the rotation.
Now that their starting pitching is looking more shored up and the Tigers look to be in a much better spot than they were at, they are beginning to shift their attention to adding some more bats to the roster. According to Jon Heyman, the Tigers are looking at outfielders Yoenis Cespedes and Alex Gordon.
Cespedes would be a reunion with the Tigers, as they traded him to the New York Mets at the trade deadline last season. Cespedes would go on to New York, as he helped them toward a National League crown and he helped solidify himself as a future MVP candidate and a top bat in this league. Bringing him back, could potentially be a big move for the Tigers as they could pair him in the lineup with Miguel Cabrera.
Alex Gordon would be another intriguing option that they could bring over from their division rivals, the Kansas City Royals. Gordon is another talented bat that the Tigers can insert into the lineup and it is a bat that they can count on to produce. He might not post the big numbers like a Cespedes, but he can make good contact and get on base, which would allow Miguel Cabrera to do damage at the plate.
The Tigers thus far have gone to work in getting things patched up on the pitching end. Now it appears that they are getting to work on fixing their hitting.
