The Seattle Mariners have found some of the pitching help they were seeking, striking a deal to acquire Wade Miley from the Boston Red Sox.

Never underestimate the power of familiarity during the MLB Winter Meetings. New Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto knew Wade Miley well when he was with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now he’ll get another look at him in the Pacific Northwest.

According to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, the Mariners have agreed on a deal to acquire Wade Miley from the Boston Red Sox. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports was the first to report the two teams were discussing the left-hander.

The full deal will send Miley and prospect Jonathan Aro to the Mariners in exchange for reliever Carson Smith and Roenis Elias per Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Miley’s only season in Boston was a tale of two periods for the left-hander. Boston signed Miley to a three-year, $19.25 million extension after acquiring him from Arizona last winter. The Red Sox then watched as he struggled in the first half to the tune of a 4.80 ERA and watched opposing hitters knock him around at a .270/.335/.422 clip.

However, things improved in the second half as Miley settled in and allowed a bit more respectable 4.09 ERA and a .258/.314/.408 slash against in the season’s second half. All said, he finished the season with an 11-11 record, a 4.46 ERA, a 3.81 FIP, and a 6.8 K/9 ratio.

Coming back to Boston is some additional bullpen help. Carson Smith allowed just 18 earned runs over 70 innings of work last season for a 2.31 ERA, a 2.12 FIP, and a solid 11.8 K/9 mark. He also picked up 13 saves in the process, giving Boston yet another late-inning arm to pair with the newly acquired Craig Kimbrel and former closer Koji Uehara at the end of games.

Elias made 20 starts for the Mariners last season, posting a 5-8 record with a 4.14 ERA and a 7.6 K/9 mark. However, he isn’t likely to be used in a Red Sox rotation that is currently fairly robust with starters. Instead, he’ll likely serve in a long-relief role
