Who are the winners and losers from the Aroldis Chapman trade?

The Aroldis Chapman trade will affect a lot of things in this free agent market. The Los Angeles Dodgers traded for Chapman, giving up two prospects to the Cincinnati Reds. Neither of those two prospects are the Dodgers’ top prospects. That’s obviously a win for the Dodgers. The Reds managed to get something for a free agent after the 2016 season. That’s an obvious win for them.

The Chapman deal will affect the free-agent market and the trade market. It will affect how much certain remaining relief pitchers will get in free agency and it will affect the return that other teams could get for their closers. Chapman was the best option available. Now the best option available depends on who you ask. Is it Zach Britton? It could very well be him. He’s relatively cheap and he’s still under team control for at least two more seasons. Is it Andrew Miller? Could be him as well. He has quite the track record and he’s still under team control for three more years.

There are winners and loser in this trade. Some of the winners and losers weren’t even involved in this trade in the slightest. But the trade will definitely affect some teams positively and other teams negatively. Here’s a quick look at who came out ahead on this deal and who didn’t.
