The mother of No. 1 recruit in the nation calls out Will Muschamp for leaving Auburn.

Rashan Gary’s mother, Jennifer Coney did an interview with 24/7 Sports to open up about her son’s recruitment as the No. 1 prospect in the high school Class of 2016. Coney is apparently not happy about former Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp abruptly leaving Auburn for the head coaching gig at South Carolina, calling Muschamp “a pure liar.”

Auburn has been in consideration for Gary’s commitment for some time. Gary is a 6’5″, 293 pound defensive tackle from New Jersey. While Gary and Coney visited Auburn during the 2015 Iron Bowl and enjoyed their time in there, Coney didn’t like the lack of transparency Muschamp recruited her son with.

Coney went on to say, “If you get a head coaching position, of course you might leave. But he should have been honest. He should have said, ‘Well, if I get the opportunity.’ I would respect that. I would have understood. It’s a job for them. But he didn’t. Muschamp is a liar. A pure liar.”

Reportedly, Auburn’s head coach Gus Malzahn was “blindsided” by Muschamp leaving the Auburn program for the South Carolina gig. Coney added about Muschamp’s departure in regards to her stance on her son potentially playing at Auburn, “If you bring representatives to me and one of your representatives tells you a blatant lie…what does that say about your organization?”

Muschamp was only on Malzahn’s staff for one season, but caused a great deal of upheaval down on The Plains. His defense was largely ineffective, as Auburn finished their regular season 6-6 (2-6) after being picked to win the SEC in 2015 during this past summer’s SEC Media Days.

Seeing Muschamp jump at the opportunity to become a head coach again in the Power 5 seems understandable give how his tenure at the University of Florida ended. It is strange to see him get another job in the SEC East this soon after his 2014 firing from the Florida program. Gary may very well commit to Auburn, he likely won’t play for the South Carolina Gamecocks now that Muschamp is running that program.
