Worst: Jeff Samardzija

The San Francisco Giants have been in the hunt for a top pitcher to pair with Madison Bumgarner. With the team looking to work their magic in 2016, and get back to being a World Series contender, the team tried to get Zack Greinke as a free agent.

Well he picked another team in the National League West, and the Giants decided to sign Jeff Samardzija to a five-year $90 million contract.

While Samardzija isn’t a bad option to add into a rotation, and was very good in the bay for the Oakland Athletics, he wasn’t good for the Chicago White Sox in 2015, and has had some inconsistency issues over his entire career.

While he’s had more good than bad, he had a 4.96 ERA in 2015, and didn’t put up the type of numbers that are worthy of being paid $18 million a year, which could come back and haunt the Giants if he pitches more like last year, instead of prior years.

While he will be in a pitcher-friendly park in San Francisco, Samardzija will be dealing with some potent offenses in the National League. He’s going to have to be the guy in the rotation the Giants can depend on besides Bumgarner, if they’re going to compete for another World Series.

He’s a far cry from Zack Greinke.
