Memphis Grizzlies: Marc Gasol
Gasol has always been an elite post defender and that’s what he’s been known for since becoming the Defensive Player of the Year in 2012-13. He’s the man that holds the Grizzlies together at both ends of the floor, and he broke out with his second All-Star appearance last season as he went to a new level on offense. With more attempts to fully utilize his mid-range game and hook shot in the post, Gasol averaged a career-high 17.4 points per game and showed far more capability to take over with that aspect of his game.
It compliments his great defense perfectly, as his scoring and passing from the post has made him a more complete player to become the Grizzlies’ MVP.
Memphis never play with much pace, and that’s where Gasol’s style fits so perfectly. He’s the strong interior defender who can slow down an opponent’s ability to drive effectively to the basket, while having the passing and post-up play to challenge other team’s who want to rely on their guards. He can control the paint at either end of the floor, and when he uses that interior presence well along with power forward Zach Randolph, the Grizzlies can dictate a game in the way they want. They can make it physical, defensive and slow, which is what Gasol exemplifies so well.
It’s not just about that, though. His scoring ability mentioned above has been on display again this season, especially with his career-high 38-point night against the Pelicans on December 1. Besides his 16 free throws on that night, he also utilized his faithful 54.9 percent 16-foot jumper, which demonstrates his skill away from the basket, too.
Gasol helps give the Grizzlies their identity, and he’s without doubt one of the best centers in the league and the MVP of his team.
