Phillies agree to deal with David Hernandez
The Philadelphia Phillies have added depth to their bullpen by adding David Hernandez.
After finishing with the worst record in major league baseball in 2015, the Philadelphia Phillies need help with just about everything on their roster as they try to rebuild and add young talent that can lead the next wave of great, young Phillies teams.
While that’s a ways off, the Phillies still need to fill out their rosters with veteran talent that can play alongside the young talent that they currently have on the main roster. On Wednesday, the team agreed to a deal with a veteran reliever, when they signed David Hernandez to a one-year deal, who they had been linked to since yesterday, according to Christ Cotillo.
While David Hernandez struggled for the Arizona Diamondbacks after he came off Tommy John surgery, he has shown that he can be a very effective reliever in baseball, if he can locate his pitches. He has tremendous velocity on his fastball, and is probably best suited for a late-inning role for the Phillies, and can potentially be a closer too if they need him to be.
While the Phillies are a market that can bring in a top name, it is best right now to fill out their roster with cheap, affordable veteran contracts until the young guys really begin to make their mark. Then they can get the top talent they want.
Right now however, it’s about finding the best deals on the market and letting the young guys do their thing.
