Raiders move to lock up Michael Crabtree
Michael Crabtree is about to get paid
Derek Carr should be a happy quarterback. His Oakland Raiders are making moves to keep his offense together. The latest move has the Raiders signing Crabtree to an extension, reported to be worth roughly $8 million per year. Not bad for a guy that many thought might be past his prime just a season ago.
Instead of heading into the twilight of his career, Crabtree is having his best season since 2012. He’s got 66 catches for 760 yards and seven touchdowns through 12 games. Along with Amari Cooper, he’s formed one of the most dangerous receiver combinations in the NFL. The former Texas Tech Red Raider uses his rare combination of size, speed and hands to torment opposing defenders.
It may seem strange for a 5-7 team to be working hard to retain its assets in the middle of a season they won’t make the Playoffs, but I credit the organization for making the smart move. They realize their most precious asset is 2nd year quarterback Derek Carr and the best way to help him succed, is to surround him with quality weapons. He’s formed an obvious chemistry with Crabtree so they’ve rightly moved to secure him for the long-term.
The real key for this deal will be whether or not Crabtree continues to work as hard after his big pay day. He’s had a questionable off the field reputation throughout his time in the NFL and sometimes guaranteed money makes those problems rear their ugly heads. The Raiders will have to be careful to stay on top of Crabtree and keep his eye on the prize at all times.
Ultimately, this is a good move for a Raider organization that is slowly returning to credibility in terms of their personnel decisions. Surrounding QB Derek Carr with talent he has chemistry with is the best way to solidify their future. The Raiders are making a $8 million dollars investment to keep Carr happy and on the right track.
