Odell Beckham Jr. says gloves don’t give him a disadvantage with his insane catches

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has explained why he wears gloves on the fields and it isn’t because they’re sticky

At some point, Odell Beckham Jr. has to get tired of answering questions about how he’s able to make such spectacular caches week-in and week-out. The questions that should irritate him the most center around whether or not his gloves are the reason behind their success. So recently, Beckham Jr. set the record straight and revealed the true reason that he wears gloves during every NFL game.

Not surprisingly, the reason Beckham Jr. wears gloves is because NFL quarterbacks throw the ball really hard and the ball hitting his bare hands well…hurts. He does admit that the gloves do help cut down on friction between the ball and hand, thereby making it easier to catch. Of course, every other NFL wide receiver has access to the same gloves and they certainly don’t make the same plays.

"“They definitely could help you, if you got the right ones on,” Beckham said via Business Insider. “But I could never give credit to my gloves for something that, you know, I sit there and practice doing. Like I said, [gloves] definitely help, but I don’t think [they are] the ultimate decider.”"

The simple truth is that former LSU product is just a freak of nature. He’s got 78 catches on the year for 1,154 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Giants this season. What’s more impressive is the way he gets his catches. We aren’t talking about a player who catches gentle bubble screens here. We are talking about a wide receiver who goes down the field and regularly bails his quarterback, Eli Manning, out by making jaw-dropping catches. He might be the best receiver in the NFL at turning almost-certain incompletions to catches.

Don’t think for a second that it’s about his choice of equipment though. He acknowledges that gloves help him on the field, but would never attribute his success to them. His ability to catch the football even when all the odds are against him just comes down to good ole-fashioned, God-given ability. You can bet Eli Manning gets on his knees and gives thanks for him every night.
