LeBron James is getting an early Christmas present
Kyrie Irving might be back with LeBron and the Cavaliers on their current road trip
When LeBron James elected to take his talents back to Cleveland, he did so with the idea that he’d have more help on the roster than when he left. Unfortunately for King James, injuries have robbed his teammates of numerous games since his arrival. Well that’s about to change with the upcoming return of star guard Kyrie Irving.
Cavaliers coach David Blatt informed the media that both Irving and guard Iman Shumpert will travel with the team and might possibly play on the current road trip. The fact that Irving is anywhere near a return is great news for LeBron and the rest of his teammates. No matter when he gets back on the floor he’ll be a huge boost for the Cavs.
Of course it’s not as if the Cavaliers have suffered mightily this season without Irving. They boast an Eastern Conference leading record of 14-7 and have looked pretty good in the process. They’ve done so despite having to start Mo Williams at point guard, but will be quite anxious to move him back to a bench role and get Irving back in the starting lineup.
Irving’s presence on the floor allows LeBron to be more of a facilitator, which is a role he prefers. Irving is a true score-first point guard and has struggled to be a creator alongside James at times. Though while he may not always be a perfect fit alongside LeBron, Irving undoubtedly helps him by taking the scoring load off of him. His ability to create his own offense really spaces the floor and gives James more room to operate.
The Cavaliers are leading the Eastern Conference without Irving and Shumpert, but being the No. 1 seed in the East isn’t their goal. It’s championship or bust for LeBron and the Cavs and they’ll need Irving to accomplish that goal. His return will allow the team to work on hitting their stride and building momentum towards the Playoffs.
