5) Los Angeles Dodgers

To the surprise of everyone around the majors, the Dodgers have been relatively inactive . Los Angeles signed Hisashi Iwakuma and brought back Chase Utley, both fine moves, but many expected the club to make a flurry of additions at the winter meetings.

With an astronomical payroll and consistently high expectations to finally win an elusive World Series title, the Dodgers seemed primed to add one of the top free agents. Instead, they lost Greinke to a division rival while missing out on Heyward and David Price.

To give the Dodgers’ front office some credit, the team was very close to completing a deal for Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, but the trade was scuttled at the last minute after a police report detailing a domestic violence accusation surfaced. That trade may have been part of a larger deal with multiple teams, and there’s no telling who the Dodgers may have ultimately acquired.

Still, the Dodgers need to be more aggressive in moving on to other plans. Arizona looks like a contender next season and the San Francisco Giants will still be around in the NL West race, so Los Angeles needs to improve to keep up in the division.

The World Series window for the Dodgers is now, even with Greinke elsewhere. Starting pitching seems like the easiest area of the roster to improve, so expect Los Angeles to be among the suitors for Johnny Cueto. Los Angeles still has a ton of assets, so multiple trades could also occur over the next couple of months.
