NFL Week 14 Odds: 5 best bets against the spread
By Brad Rowland
Locking down five can’t miss NFL picks against the spread.
Disaster is the best word to describe what has taken place the last two weeks in this particular space. After a two-week stretch that saw an 80% (!) success rate, things have crashed back to Earth in a big way, with a 1-4 showing in Week 13 as the latest example.
The public is raking in the money right now as significant favorites cover and “sharp” sides fail, and that isn’t a good thing for those of us that take the contrarian position. However, these things usually balance out in the end, and that is the reason that sportsbooks continue to exist with the public “donating” excess funds to the bookmakers on a regular basis.
We will continue to “fade the public,” and before we get to the picks, let’s take a look at where the season-long numbers sit right now:
- Last Week: 1-4
- Season: 34-29-2
While they aren’t quite as crisp as earlier in the season, the picks easily clear the .500 mark and no one can throw too many tantrums with that mark. At any rate, here are the Week 14 picks that will hopefully right the ship.
Philadelphia Eagles (+1) over Buffalo Bills
Even after an impressive win over the New England Patriots, no one is buying an Eagles resurgence. Chip Kelly’s team is very much in the thick of the NFC Playoff race with a 5-7 record (as crazy as that seems), meaning it has plenty to play for in this spot.
Moreover, the Eagles are getting zero respect from a line standpoint, as they are getting points at home against a solid but unspectacular Bills team. More than two-thirds of the action is on a Buffalo team coming off a nice win over Houston. However, given the venue of the game and a Philly team that looks much better at this point in the year, I have to take the home underdog. It is in my DNA.
