Broken thumb recovery time
By Josh Hill
How long does it take for a player to recover from a broken thumb?
Injuries are a harsh reality in sports, as a player can be going off only to have an injury grind his success to a halt. We’ve seen it all over the place in sports in recent years, but not everything is as serious as an ACL tear — which is the worst case scenario as far as injuries are concerned.
But just because something isn’t as serious as a torn ligament doesn’t mean it’s not going to keep a player or athlete out for significant time. A broken bone isn’t really ideal and it’s something that could hold a player and his team back from being all they can be — especially if it’s an injury that occurs late in the season.
When it comes to the recovery time for a player with a broken thumb or hand, it really depends on the severity of the injury and which hand is injured. A quarterback who injures his non-throwing hand might not miss any time at all, whereas a quarterback who injures their throwing hand will miss at least 1-2 weeks to recover.
That’s being generous too, as a broken bone takes time to heal, and if your team is in the playoff hunt then it’s not advised that they get rushed back into action. Tony Romo tried returning from a broken clavicle and ended up hurting himself again. A broken thumb is a little less severe than a collarbone break, but that doesn’t mean the recovery time is necessarily less.
To be on the safe side, a player with a broken thumb or finger will probably miss 2-3 weeks at minimum but the full recovery time is somewhere in the area of 4-5 weeks.
