Cincinnati Bengals quarterback A.J. McCarron throws a pick-six.
Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback A.J. McCarron has been thrust into a prominent role due to an injury to the teams starter, Andy Dalton. McCarron had a 66-yard touchdown pass to receiver A.J. Green, which gave some hope to the team that they may be alright in Dalton’s absence.
Then he reminded us all why he was a fifth-round pick and serves as a backup. A.J. tried to convert a bubble screen pass off a play-action and never saw that Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback William Gay had it read the whole way.
The quarterback took a shot while throwing a floater that Gay stepped in front of the pass and walked in for a 22-yard pick-six.
Earlier in the season there was a debate in some circles on whether or not McCarron could take over for the maligned quarterback Dalton at some point this season. Instead, the “Red Rocket” Dalton has shown serious progress on the season coming into the day with 3,191 yards and an impressive 25 touchdowns to just six picks.
Sometimes the best way for a team to truly appreciate how much their quarterback gives to their team, they need to see him sit on the sidelines some. For the Bengals, they probably have seen enough to know Dalton is their guy.
Instead of asking if McCarron can replace Dalton, the fans may now be asking how much longer they have to wait for Dalton to come back.
