Todd Gurley came back to life as the Rams topped the Lions

50. Final. 21. 51. 14

The Detroit Lions suffered a demoralizing last-second loss on a Hail Mary their last time out leading up to their Week 14 matchup with the St. Louis Rams. However, they were looking to get things back on track after having looked promising prior to that last-second throw. Unfortunately, Todd Gurley and the Rams had other plans.

The early going of this game was incredibly ugly with really neither offense being able to do anything as Matthew Stafford looked ineffective and Case Keenum and Gurley looked even worse. It was a defensive struggle with the only score of the first half coming off of a pick-six taken to the house by Rams defensive back Trumaine Johnson. The Lions answered with a Golden Tate touchdown catch to start the second half, but that was just about all that they would get from that point on.

The Rams started pounding the ball with Gurley and the rushing attack and he started to break off big chunks of yardage. That ultimately resulted in a third-quarter rushing touchdown and then another in the fourth quarter from the rookie running back to put St. Louis up 21-7. From there, the Rams defense continued to stifle Stafford and the Lions for the most part. Detroit managed a late score to save some face and even recovered an onside kick. However, the Rams came up with the big late-game stop to secure the win.

Three stars

Todd Gurley was beast for a Rams offense that needed him to be. He took 16 carries for 140 yards and two scores on the afternoon in the victory.

Trumaine Johnson was a star on the defensive end as he accrued five total tackles, two pat-downs in coverage, and of course the 58-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Aaron Donald was just an absolute monster defensively for the Rams as the lethal pass-rusher amassed three sacks and six quarterback hits on the afternoon.

Highlights

Odds

The Lions were 3.5-point favorites in this game, a spread they obviously failed to cover in the loss. The two teams also fell short of the 41-point O/U line.

Next Week

The Rams will be at home again next week for a matchup with the feisty Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Detroit will stay on the road next week, travelling down south to take on the New Orleans Saints.
