Dolphins wearing 1966 throwbacks on MNF tonight
The Miami Dolphins will go with an old school look when they host the New York Giants on Monday Night Football tonight.
Both the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins enter tonight’s Monday Night Football game with a record of 5-7. The winning team will keep their slim playoff chances mathematically alive while the loser will drop to 5-8 with an absolute best case scenario of finishing the season at .500, and likely be all but eliminated from playoff contention.
Tonight the Dolphins will bust out an old school, throwback look. A look that dates back about 50 years:
From the moment that the Miami Dolphins officially became an American Football League expansion team in 1966 until the organization underwent a major logo and brand change back in 2013, the team’s colors were predominantly teal green, orange and white. In 2013, the team altered it’s logo from a cartoon version of their trademark dolphin to a simpler, more serious looking mammal. That, and the teal green was changed into an aqua (more lighter blue/green mix) color.
The Dolphins uniforms have always had one of the nicer color schemes; not just among NFL franchises, but franchises throughout the four major professional sports as well. There is a rich history in Miami, which includes the 1972 undefeated team and the Dan Marino era, and a major portion of that history was made while wearing uniforms that looked good, similar to the uniform that will be worn tonight.
Entering tonight, Miami is officially 2.5 games back in the AFC playoff picture behind the 8-5 Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. The New York Giants are a half game back of the 6-7 Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins in the NFC East.
