Jose Fernandez non-committal about future in Miami

Jose Fernandez is not happy about the Miami Marlins offseason.

There are times where much more is said by what is actually not said at all. Such was the case earlier in the week when Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was asked about his feelings on the Marlins’ offseason thus far, one which has been high on talking about it, but very short on actually being about it.

Fernandez, who was one of the most discussed, yet ultimately stagnant names during last week’s MLB Winter Meetings, was short to get to the point about his feelings about his club’s activities….or lack thereof.

During an press session at a baseball camp held at Miami’s Hank Kline Boy & Girls Club –which holds Fernandez’ namesake within the event title no less— Fernandez did not sound long for being a part of the Marlins currently…. but not that he would actually say so.

“I can’t comment on that,” was his reply when asked about whether he felt the Marlins would compete next year after being so stagnant in talent acquisition thus far this winter.

He denied that the rampant discussions about his club attempting to deal him over the past few weeks bothered him either, although it is hard to imagine that such a public spin around the rumor mill is not disappointing. Ultimately however, the discussions the organization had on dealing Fernandez led nowhere, as it was indicated their asking price as (understandably) incredibly high for the 2012 National League Rookie of the Year, who has maintained a 2.40 ERA over his first 289 career innings.

However, the crescendo was yet to come. When asked if he wanted to stay in Miami, Fernandez replied yet again opened with an confirmation of his current level of enthusiasm, stating “I’ve got no comment on that.” While still sticking to his prescribed order of operations for the day, he finally said all he needed to say on his opinion on the matter –while still saying nothing at all.

Fernandez expanded on his opinion regarding his current membership of the Marlins organization by saying “I’m not allowed to comment on it,” when discussing his desire to continue to be a Marlin throughout the rest of his contractual obligation to the club, which carries through the 2019 season.

However, all was not lost on the day, as while his distaste for his current surroundings on the actual 25-man roster was somewhat offset by his support for the hiring of Don Mattingly as manager and Barry Bonds as associate hitting coach.

But while less is can sometimes be more, it is without a doubt less and increasingly less for the beleaguered Fernandez’ run in Miami.
